Day named faculty athletics representative

Tim Day, professor of biomedical sciences, has been named the new faculty athletics representative, effective July 1. He succeeds Paula Morrow, who has served since 2003. Day has been a member of the faculty since 2000 and was chair of the neuroscience program from 2002 to 2008. He has served as a Faculty Senator and on the Athletics Council since 2005. In 2007, he was on the Athletics Council since 2005, serving as chair since 2007.

Move-in crew seeks volunteers

The department of residence move-in crew invites faculty and staff to help welcome freshmen and their families to campus this fall. Duties include carrying students' belongings, answering questions and providing a welcoming atmosphere. Interested? Register by May 12. More information will be provided later this summer.

CEAH seeks new director

The Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development (VPR/ED) invites applications for the position of director, Center for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities (CEAH). This is a part-time position reporting to the Office of the VPR/ED. Faculty are invited to submit a letter of application and C.V. to Chitra Rajan by May 17. Applicants should be tenured, with a current appointment in an arts, humanities, design or social science department at ISU. More information is online.

ISU Dining dishes up brunch for Mother's Day, commencement

ISU Dining is hosting a buffet-style brunch featuring carved meats, sides, desserts and breakfast items May 9 (10:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m., MU ballrooms). Campus memorials for Jon Lacina, TJ Good scheduled for April 22

Campus ceremonies on April 22 will honor two former Iowa State students. The College of Design will hold a memorial for Jon Lacina at noon, north of the King Pavilion. Lacina's family will attend. The College of Engineering and the department of civil, construction and environmental engineering will hold a memorial for Travis "TJ" Good at 7:30 p.m. in the Howe Hall auditorium. A candlelight vigil will follow outside the building. All are welcome at both events.

All are invited to STEM coffee

The Center for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Education (CESMEE) invite all to the next STEM education collaboration coffee April 26 (9-10 a.m., N221-E Lagomarcino). Discussion will focus on the Common Core Standards' potential effect on STEM education, including preservice teacher preparation.

New EAP is topic of P&S Council open forum

ISU's new employee assistance program (EAP) provider, Employee and Family Resources, is the topic of an April 28 Professional and Scientific Council open forum (noon-1 p.m., Gallery, MU). Mike Otis, associate director of human resource services, will present an overview of the university's new EAP services. Cherry tree plantings honor Veishea tradition

Landscape architecture students will plant three cherry trees near MacKay Hall, home of Veishea cherry pies, on April 22. The tree plantings honor the pie makers (students in hotel restaurant and institution management) and will provide fresh local produce. They are part of Iowa State's observance of Earth Day (April 22) and Arbor Day (April 30). College deans Pamela White (Human Sciences) and Luis Rico-Gutierrez (Design) will be part of the short program that begins at 4 p.m. south of MacKay and east of LeBaron Hall.

Bottle, can recycling test to run at MU through April 30

A two-week pilot effort (April 19-30) will be used to assess campus interest in recycling redeemable beverage bottles and cans (any brand) around the Memorial Union. Fifteen red-and-white containers are located at 14 locations, most of them near interior or exterior entrances, around the MU. The project is spearheaded by The Green Umbrella student organization. Volunteers will count what's collected; that data will be part of a decision on long-term recycling efforts at the student union.

Vote for electric-assist bikes

Iowa State and University of Minnesota could score some free electric-assist bikes if enough people cast their vote for the Green Campus Project. It's among 1,000 grants posted on the PEPSI Refresh Grant web site. At the end of the month, 32 top vote getters win grants. You can vote once a day through April 30 at this site.

Parking permit renewals begin April 26

At 9 a.m. April 26, current parking permit holders may begin to renew their permits for the fiscal year that begins July 1. Renewal will be online through AccessPlus. Current permit holders will receive a reminder e-mail from the parking division that morning.

The parking division announced that several reserved lots (map) will have available spaces on July 1. They are being filled on a first-come, first-served basis. E-mail Mark Miller to request one of these spots:

  • 25 spaces: Lot 22
  • 6 spaces: Lot 11
  • 5 spaces: Lot 34
  • 3 spaces: Lots 50A, 121

Central Stores to be closed April 21-23

Central Stores will be closed April 21, 22 and 23 for inventory. No Central Stores orders will be filled or delivered on those days. However, Office Max orders can be placed and will be delivered. In emergency situations, call 4-8484.

Senior Portfolio Night for graphic design students is April 22

Graphic design seniors will display their portfolios and work samples at Graphic Design Senior Portfolio Night April 22 in the Memorial Union Sun Room. Entrepreneurship students test themselves in lemonade stand competition

Lemonade lovers will get several opportunities to support a local lemonade stand during an Apprentice-style competition among undergraduates in the entrepreneurship learning community. Four teams will have lemonade stands on central campus April 15, 16 and 22. Their profits will go to a pre-selected charity.

Members of the search committee charged with finding the next dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine will outline their search process and seek input for the position description during a campus forum April 21 (8-9 a.m., 1226 Vet Med). Fire safety training starts April 20

Environmental health and safety is offering fire extinguisher training for ISU employees working in a state building. This training is an annual requirement. Some north campus lots will close Thursday evening for Veishea

Parking lots north of the Communications, Molecular Biology and Metals Development buildings will close at 5:30 p.m. April 15 to prepare the area for Veishea concerts Friday and Saturday. Permit holders in lots 27, 28 and 29 are asked to use the commuter lots in the Iowa State Center on Friday and ride the orange shuttle route to campus.

Request reserve materials now for summer, fall courses

Instructors who wish to place required material on reserve at Parks Library for summer or fall semester should submit requests now. Forms are available on the library homepage (select "classes & tours," then "reserve," then "instructor forms & information." Select the desired form.)

Register to volunteer for Special Olympics by April 23

The deadline to register as a volunteer for the Special Olympics Iowa summer games is Friday, April 23. A variety of shifts and responsibilities are available by signing up online. The event, which takes place May 20-22 in Ames, draws more than 3,000 athletes statewide.

Latest computer virus captures keystrokes to gather sensitive information

The latest computer virus affecting computers running Windows is designed to capture keystrokes to gather sensitive information such as bank account and credit card information, login IDs and passwords. IT Services recommends updating vulnerable software (Adobe Reader, Flash and Java) and adding an ad blocker to your Firefox browser.

The Iowa State American Meteorological Society is offering free weather radio programming for students, faculty and staff April 14 (3-6 p.m., 2nd floor commons, Agronomy). Bring your own weather radio; radios will not be for sale at this event.

New pay grades available for P&S employees

Professional and scientific employees may view their position's updated pay grade in the new P&S compensation structure. Log on to AccessPlus, click the "Employee" tab and select the "P&S Compensation" link. Employees will see their current pay grade and salary, new pay grade, and minimum and maximum salaries of the new pay grade. ISU's new P&S compensation structure will be implemented July 1, pending approval from the state Board of Regents.

Town and gown conference comes to Ames in June

Ames will be the site of a conference on "Best Practices in Building University/City Relations" June 1-3. The conference, sponsored by the International Town and Gown Association, will be held at Gateway Hotel & Conference Center. Registration is $350 for those who register April 15 or earlier.

Intermodal transportation meeting April 7

ISU students, faculty and staff and Ames residents are invited to an April 7 meeting to discuss redesign efforts for an intermodal transportation facility in campustown. Such a facility would provide connections between nearly all modes of transportation, including bicycle, pedestrian, carpool, CyRide buses, intercity buses and taxis, within one location. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Pioneer Room.

The Office of LGBT Student Services will provide updated training for employees who want a new Safe Zone sticker for their offices.
