Meeting today in Ames, the state Board of Regents gave final approval to 72 promotion and tenure decisions for ISU faculty. The list includes 41 promotions to associate professor with tenure and 28 promotions to full professor. The new titles officially take effect in August in conjunction with the new academic year.

Volunteers are needed for the 2011 Special Olympics summer games, held May 26-28 in Ames. A variety of shifts and responsibilities are available by signing up online. The event draws more than 3,000 athletes from around the state.

A team of Iowa State students finished first and second in North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture contests held recently in Modesto, Calif. The students won the Ag Knowledge Bowl and placed second overall in the Crops Contest. More.

Students from the forestry and landscape architecture clubs will plant several uncommon species of evergreen and deciduous trees April 28 (noon, southeast corner of University Boulevard and Haber Road) in obervance of Arbor Day (April 29). Joining them will be Joe Colletti, senior associate dean in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences; Steven Jungst, interim chair of the entomology and natural resource ecology and management (NREM) departments; and Dave Miller, associate vice president for facilities planning and management. NREM purchased the trees as part of a project to increase the diversity in ISU's tree inventory, particularly for teaching purposes. FPM will maintain the trees. All are welcome to the planting.

All members of the university community are invited to a kickoff event April 27 (11 a.m.-1 p.m., central campus) for Iowa State's ExerCYse IS Medicine campaign. Coordinated by members of the kinesiology department as a campus component of the international organization, the goal is to promote physical activity instead of, or along with, medications. Activites include whiffle ball golf, hula hooping, kickball, water balloon toss, dancing, a team adventure race and 3-on-3 basketball (register online for the last two events). Iowa State was cited for such things as the loan fund for sustainability projects, LEED certification requirements on building projects, campus Green Teams, dining's commitment to local and organic foods, competing in an international solar-powered house competition and more. Following four months of online voting, Reiman Gardens is a $5,000 winner in an "intelligent use of water" awards program. The gardens' rain garden is designed to reduce the gardens' water consumption and demonstrate publicly how surface water can be used in landscaped environments.

Domtar Husky xerocopy paper, which formerly came in a green and white box, now is packaged in a purple and white box, part of the company's "PAPER because" campaign. It's the same SFI-certified paper you're accustomed to using.

The Quick Search tool atop the e-Library homepage will become the key tool for accessing library collections, physical and electronic, starting in summer of 2011. At the same time, the library catalog search will be discontinued. The catalog has limited ability to search online resources, such as e-books, full-text journal articles and websites. Quick Search can do those searches as well as searches of the library's physical collections. More.

After considering operational staff for a next-generation DNA sequencer it bought last year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Animal Disease Center agreed to install it in Iowa State's DNA Facility in the Molecular Biology Building. University scientists will operate the sequencer for both NADC and on-campus researchers.

Students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences' "Science with Practice" course will host a poster presentation and reception April 27 (3:30-5 p.m., Kildee Hall atrium). Students, faculty and staff are welcome. The course provides students experiential learning experiences at ISU research labs, farms, greenhouses, where they work with a mentor on a research project.

The University of Nevada, Reno, and family of Milton D. Glick will host a public memorial service to honor his life and legacy on April 21, 4 p.m. at Lawlor Events Center on the university campus in Reno. Glick, who served as Iowa State provost from 1988 to 1991, died April 16 after suffering a massive stroke. He was 73. Glick had served as president of the University of Nevada, Reno, since August 2006. During his last eight months at Iowa State, he also served as acting president until Martin Jiscke arrived on campus. From 1991 to 2006, Glick served as provost at Arizona State University. More.

A public memorial service for former English faculty member Margaret "Marty" Baker Graham will be held Friday, April 22 (1:30 p.m., MU Cardinal Room). Graham, a professor of English, died Jan. 6 after a long illness. She taught English and women's studies courses from 1983 to 2010 and served as director of first-year composition from 1994 to 2003.

The Daily Beast recently ranked Ames 15th on its list of 25 Smartest College Towns. The ranking is based bachelor's and graduate degrees per capita for the over-25 population, median math and reading SAT scores for the college population and libraries per capita.

The University Book Store in the Memorial Union has installed an inkjet printer cartridge refilling system and is offering one free ink refill per customer April 18-23 so people can try it. Ink-O-Dem's system provides eco-friendly, quality ink at a lower cost than printer manufacturer cartridges. Customers should bring an empty compatible cartridge to the store for a complimentary refill.

The Social Justice Summit planning committee is seeking a co-chair for the 2012 Summit next Feb. 2-4. The committee includes faculty, staff and students, but traditionally is co-chaired by an undergraduate and graduate student. The committee's next meeting is April 22 (2 p.m., MU 2213). During the summit, about 50-60 participants (largely students) interested in social justice connect and create action plans through small and large group activities.

The Office for Responsible Research will hold an informational session, "How to Perform Category D and E Searches," April 20 (3 p.m., 2532 Veterinary Medicine). ISU attending veterinarian Mary Sauer will address federal regulatory requirements regarding pain and distress, and provide tips for completing IACUC application forms. Inappropriate responses on an application regarding pain and distress are a common reason for a delay in approval. Those interested in attending are asked to email Connie Regenold.

A consultant hired by ISU Dining to assess campuswide dining needs and preferences has created an online survey. ISU Dining leaders ask members of the university community to complete the survey by the end of the day Friday, April 15. (At the login site, the password is isu, all lowercase.) "On the Path to Transformation: Looking Back and Looking Forward with ISU ADVANCE" will include project accomplishments, a reader's theater and discussion on future initiatives. Author and Colgate University faculty member John D. Palmer will read from his book, The Dance of Identities: Korean Adoptees and Their Journey toward Empowerment, April 17 (3:30 p.m., MU Gold Room). Palmer's book looks at how Korean adoptees engage ("dance") with their various identities on a journey toward self-discovery. His presentation is open to the public.

The ISU Alumni Association will host a memorial service for the late James ("Jim") Hopson April 30 (10:30 a.m., ISU Alumni Center, 420 Beach Ave.) It is open to the public. Hopson served as executive director of the alumni association from 1979 to 1999. He died of congestive heart failure Jan. 24 in Sun City, Ariz. He was 71. His family has asked that all memorial gifts be directed to the ISU alumni association for one of three areas: alumni volunteer recognition, student-young alumni engagement, or the alumni center endowment fund. Ames-area state and federal employees are invited to recycle their personal electronics Thursday, April 21, 7 a.m. to noon, at the State Department of Transportation offices, 800 Lincoln Way. Most items (such as batteries, copiers, DVD players, fax machines, handheld electronics, laptops, printers and video games) can be recycled free. Recycling fees will be charged for monitors and TVs. The recycling event is provided by the DOT Green Team and Department of Natural Resources Iowa Waste Exchange Program.
