Fans at Saturday's Homecoming game will compete against nearly 90 other universities in a recycling contest sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency. Help ISU win by bringing as little trash as possible to the game and recycling the rest at various recycling spots around the stadium.

As part of ISU's "Toward Sustainable Cities" series, Claudia Lueling, Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, will present a lecture, "Energizing Architecture," Nov. 4 (5:30 p.m., 416 Design, reception follows at 6:30 p.m.). Using examples from her book of the same title, Lueling will describe technologies and materials available to architects that could make buildings producers of energy rather than just consumers.

Iowa State's Virus-Insect Interactions Group seeks collaborators, particularly from non-biological sciences disciplines, to establish multi-disciplinary research groups that will address global food security and climate change questions relating to virus-insect interactions. Those with expertise or a technology that could facilitate the study of virus-insect interactions or associated translational research are asked to contact Bryony Bonning.

The U.S. Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services announced that application fees for various immigration benefits will change, effective Nov. 23. Applications postparked on or after Nov. 23 will be subject to the new fees. A list of updated fees for commonly filed immigration applications, including H-1B temporary worker and permanent residence in the United States, are on ISU's International Students and Scholars website.

The annual fund-raiser for the Ames-ISU YWCA, "Just Desserts: A Taste of Chocolate and More," will take place on Monday, Nov. 1, at The Knoll (7-8:30 p.m.). Members of the Human Development and Family Studies Club will sell Scholastic books appropriate for young children during a book fair Oct. 21-22 (8 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Palmer Building atrium). The target age for the books is preschool/kindergarten children; a limited number of chapter books also will be available. The money raised will be converted to Scholastic dollars and used to buy more books for organizations or schools in the Ames area.

Colleges Against Cancer of Iowa State is holding "Bowling for Boobs" Oct. 19 (6-10 p.m., Underground, MU) to raise money to help find a cure for breast cancer. Bowling games are $3, T-shirts are $10; get both for $12. T-shirts also are available in the MU Oct. 13-15 (10 a.m.-2 p.m.) for $10. Breast cancer survivor Carrie Johnson, Ames, will be on hand to talk with attendees. This event is open to the public.

Due to additional one-time federal funds, the work-study split for the 2010-11 academic year will change from 60/40 to 75/25 (the employer will be responsible for 25 percent of the student's wages). Four study circles for faculty this semester will focus on strengthening graduate education. The sessions are part of Iowa State's NSF-funded Strengthening the Professoriate at ISU initiative. Closets Collide, a student-run clothing swap will be held Saturday, Oct. 23, in the Memorial Union Sun Room. Participants donate clothing and receive tickets that can be exchanged for clothes and accessories at the event. Don Schoen and Justin Schoen, a father-son duo, will talk about their entrepreneurial efforts during a Reiman entrepreneurial forum Oct. 22 (noon-1 p.m., MU Gallery). Don is the co-founder and former CEO of software vendor MediNotes, West Des Moines (now Eclipsys); Justin is president of eComegy, a new digital marketing company, Des Moines.

The Intensive English and Orientation Program (IEOP) is offering a course on developing conversational skills for international visiting scholars, faculty/staff and graduate students. Jonathan Brown, an Iowa State student who was struck by a vehicle approximately one-half mile from Jack Trice Stadium on Oct. 2, died Thursday morning at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A celebration of Brown's life will be held Monday, Oct. 11, at 10 a.m. at the Pennsylvania Avenue Free Methodist Church, 820 Pennsylvania Ave., Ottumwa. The visitation will be held Sunday, Oct. 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family has directed memorials to the Salt Company, a college ministry of Cornerstone Church in Ames. The Brown family has said they will wear cardinal and gold to the funeral and invite others to join them.
A moment of silence will be observed at Saturday's Iowa State football game in memory of Brown, who was a junior in computer engineering at ISU. His family will be in attendance at the game.

Oct. 11 is recognized across the country as National Coming Out Day. ISU's office of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender student services and the LGBT Alliance are hosting a week of events (Oct. 8-15) to raise awareness and celebrate the coming out process. Traditionally, Iowa State's fall semester Graduate College ceremony has been held the evening of the last Friday of the semester. However, this fall 2010, the graduate ceremony will be combined with the undergraduate ceremony into one commencement on Saturday, Dec. 18 (1:30 p.m., Hilton Coliseum). There are no plans at this time to combine the spring commencement ceremonies because of the larger number of participants in those ceremonies.

A memorial service for Marcia King-Brink, supervior in the Meat Lab's analytical laboratory, will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at Community United Methodist Church, 337 SW 2nd St., Ogden. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, also at the church. Memorials will be used at her family's discretion. King-Brink died Oct. 2 near her home.

The ISU chapter of the Sigma Lambda Gamma sorority will host a "Rent A Puppy" event Oct. 15 (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) and 16 (noon-4 p.m.) on the lawn south of the campanile. Those who miss their pet, are looking to adopt a dog, or wish they had a dog but can't, may "rent" a dog for $10 and play with it inside a designated area for up to 30 minutes. The University Book Store is conducting a comprehensive customer satisfaction survey through Oct. 15. Faculty, staff and students are invited to complete the online survey about operational aspects such as computer software selection, textbook availability and pricing, and store hours. Those completing the survey will receive a $5 coupon for use on their next visit to the bookstore. Surveys will be tabulated and analyzed by research staff at the National Association of College Stores, a non-profit trade association of which UBS is a member.

The city of Ames has moved Halloween trick-or-treating to Friday, Oct. 29 (PDF) (5:30-7:30 p.m.). The change (from Oct. 30) is intended to hold the event prior to the crowds and additional traffic a Cyclone home football game create in Ames. Oct. 30 is Iowa State Homecoming.
