3,000-plus will receive degrees next weekend
|

Iowa State will honor and send off an estimated 3,167 graduating students
May 7-8 during spring commencement exercises.
At 8 p.m. Friday, May 7, an estimated 90 doctoral and 332 master's students
will receive degrees during a ceremony in C.Y. Stephens Auditorium.
Ames Laboratory director and chemistry faculty member Tom Barton will speak
to the graduate students. Since 1998, Barton also has served as director of
the Institute for Physical Research and Technology, a consortium of 10
research centers on campus.
At noon Saturday, also in Stephens, 102 graduates will receive the doctor of
veterinary medicine degree in a College of Veterinary Medicine ceremony.
Retiring dean of the college, Norm Cheville, will give the address.
And at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Hilton, an estimated 2,643 students will
receive bachelor's degrees at the undergraduate ceremony.
Des Moines businessman and 1992 Iowa Business Leader of the Year John
Pappajohn will give the address. Pappajohn gifts totaling $2 million
established the Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship at Iowa State.
The Official University Mace will be used for the first time at spring
commencement events. It will be carried in the procession by a faculty
marshal.
Colleges will honor their graduates during preliminary events. A complete
