Honors
Board of governors member
David Strom, manager of transportation services, has been elected to the
board of governors for the National Association of Fleet Administrators
(NAFA) and chair of the Mid-West NAFA chapter (Iowa and Nebraska). NAFA is a
not-for-profit society of managers of vehicle fleets in the United States
and Canada.
Board member
Jane Jacobson, director of student academic services in the College of
Liberal Arts and Sciences, has been elected to the board of directors for
the National Academic Advising Association. The organization promotes
quality academic advising and professional development to ensure educational
development of students.
Print excellence
ISU Printing Services recently received three awards in a competition
sponsored by Printing Industry of the Midlands, Des Moines Club of Printing
House Craftsmen and the International Publishing Management Assoc., all of
Des Moines, to recognize excellence in print quality. The president's 2002
holiday card and inserts on a binder prepared for the ISU Meat Lab received
gold awards. A five-picture postcard set done for Reiman Gardens received a
silver award.
Environmental excellence
Two Iowa Staters recently received annual (2003) Iowa Environmental
Excellence Awards. James Baker, University professor in agricultural and
biosystems engineering, received the award in the water quality division for
teaching and research contributions that reduce the impact of agricultural
chemicals on soil and water quality. Mark Shour, Extension program
specialist in entomology, was part of a West Des Moines school district team
that received awards in both the environmental excellence and waste
management categories for a multi-pronged plan for integrated pest
management at all the district's buildings.
New president
Larry Johnson, professor of food science and human nutrition and director of
the Center for Crops Utilization Research, has been elected president of the
American Oil Chemists Society. The society is an international organization
whose members work with fats, oils and other related materials used for
edible and non-edible purposes.
Executive council chair
Debra Sanborn, director of special retention programs in the Dean of
Students Office, has been elected chair of the executive council of the
National Student Exchange (NSE). NSE is a consortium of colleges and
universities in the United States, U.S. territories and Canada participating
in inter-university student exchanges. Iowa State ranks among the top 10
schools for student participation in NSE.
