Honors
Ag College awards
The College of Agriculture has presented its annual awards to: Lee Burras,
associate professor of agronomy, Outstanding Adviser Award; Gail Nonnecke,
professor of horticulture, Outstanding Achievement in Teaching Award; Jack
Dekkers, professor of animal science, Outstanding Achievement in Research
Award; Tong Wang, assistant professor of food science and human nutrition,
Early Achievement in Research Award; Mike Duffy, professor of economics,
Award for Outstanding Achievement in Extension; Beverlyn Lundy Allen,
assistant professor of sociology, Award for Early Achievement in Extension;
Donald Beitz, Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor of Agriculture in
animal science, and collaborators at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's
National Animal Disease Center, Team Award (team also included collaborating
professors Jesse Goff, Ronald Horst, Brian Nonnecke and Timothy Reinhardt);
William Edwards, professor of economics, Excellence in International
Agriculture Award; Jan Ostermann, secretary in the office of student
services, Merit Staff Award for Achievement and Service; Rich Pirog, Leopold
Center for Sustainable Agriculture program manager, Professional and
Scientific Staff Award for Achievement and Service; William Graves,
professor of horticulture, Faculty Award for Diversity Enhancement; Antonio
Mallarino, professor of agronomy, Raymond and Mary Baker Agronomic
Excellence Award; and James Baker, University professor in Agricultural and
Biosystems Engineering, John Lawrence, director of the Iowa Beef Center, and
Brian Meyer, director of college relations, Dean's Citation for
Extraordinary Contributions to the College of Agriculture.
Keynote address
Carl Chang, department of computer science chair, gave a keynote address
("Evolving the World of Computing and Networking -- a 2020 Vision") at the
TAO Gigabit Network Symposium in Tokyo, Japan, in January.
Hall of Famer
Jerry Sell, professor emeritus of animal science, was inducted into the
American Poultry Historical Society Hall of Fame (an honor conferred on five
or less people every three years) for the effect his work has had on the
North American poultry industry.
Lifetime achievement
Max Wortman, Distinguished Professor of management, received the inaugural
United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneur-ship Max S.
Wortman, Jr., Lifetime Achievement Award for Entrepreneur-ship. The award
was named after Wortman for his commitment to the teaching and study of
entrepreneurial education.
