Honors
Fulbright Scholar
Cynthia Myers, adjunct instructor of English, received a Fulbright Scholar
grant to develop a multi-media English as a Foreign Language curriculum for
a Web-based course at the University of Concepcion, Chile, from August 2003
to January 2004.
Custom woodworking
Chris Martin, assistant professor of art and design and head of the wood
design program in the College of Design, is a top winner in Custom
Woodworking Business magazine's 11th annual Design Portfolio Awards
competition. Martin won first place in the Commercial/Institutional
Furniture category for a conference table and matching credenza designed and
built for the Hometown Perry, Iowa, conference room.
High ranking
The department of architecture has been ranked one of the best values for
architecture education by the editors of DesignIntelligence, a
monthly publication for leaders in design professions.
Research award
Deborah Kilgore, assistant professor of educational leadership and policy
studies, and graduate student Michelle Cook received the Distinguished
Research Award from the Iowa Educational Research and Evaluation Association
for research on obstacles to better undergraduate teaching. In the study,
they examine higher education institutions' structures, policies and
cultures, and question why, despite policies and programs designed to foster
it, scholarship on teaching is slow to develop in research
institutions.
New fellow
James McCalley, professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been
named a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the
world's largest technical professional society.
Creative writing
Debra Marquart, associate professor of English, won the "best essay" award
in the 2003 William Faulkner-William B. Wisdom Creative Writing competition
for work titled "Pilgrim Soul."
