honors
Honorary professor
Ramesh Kanwar, professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering, has
been awarded an Honorary Professorship by Ningxia University, Yinchuan,
China. Kanwar has been working in Ningxia on the United Nation's development
program, Yellow River Management Project.
National honor
The American Society of Agronomy named agronomy professor Antonio Mallarino
recipient of the Werner L. Nelson Award for Diagnosis of Yield-Limiting
Factors, in recognition of outstanding perfor-mance and leadership in the
development of diagnostic techniques and approaches in the field.
Medal of honor
Kate Schwennsen, associate dean of the College of Design, was named the 2003
recipient of the AIA Iowa Medal of Honor, which recognizes distinguished
service to the profession.
Education award
The American Institute of Architects Iowa chapter presented the Education
Award to Clare Cardinal-Pett, associate professor of architec-ture and
director of graduate educa-tion, in recognition of significant contributions
to architectural education in Iowa.
Innovative programming
Director Larry Hanneman and his Engineering Career Services staff have
received the 2003 Outstanding Achievement Award for Innovative Programs in
the Career Services Field.
Crops society president
Agronomy professor Ken Moore has been named president of the Crop Science
Society of America for 2003-04.
Crops society fellow
Agronomy professor Russ Mullen has been named a fellow of the Crops Science
Society of America. He was one of 11 crop scientists selected.
Research award
Brian Hand, professor of curriculum and instruction and director of the
Center for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education, received the
2003 Thomas N. Urban Research Award from the First in the Nation in
Education Foundation for his research on the use of writing to learn science
in secondary school and college classrooms.
AAAS fellows
Harley Moon, professor emeritus of veterinary pathology; Colin Scanes,
professor of animal science; and Walter Trahanovsky, professor of chemistry;
have been elected fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of
Science.
