Eye on Florence
The music department will host a Jan. 29-31 symposium on Florence, Italy.
The symposium recognizes the contribution made by professor emeritus Carl
Bleyle to the department's Semester in Florence program.
Three of the symposium events are free and open to the public. They will
begin at 7:30 p.m. in Tye Hall, Music Building.
On Thursday, art critic and historian John Spike will discuss "The
Ambiguities of Caravaggio," an Italian artist who died in 1610. Caravaggio's
work caused public outcry because of its realistic and dramatic nature.
On Friday, Iowa State student ensembles will perform a concert on "Music
Inspired by Florence -- Its Art and Literature."
Saturday's concert, "Italian Music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance," will
feature Musica Antiqua (directed by Bleyle) and Spike, who will introduce
slides of Renaissance paintings.
