Honors
Research recognition
Gustavo Gonzales, Extension program specialist in meat science, received the
2003 Graduate Research Award from the Ultrasonic Industry Association for
the research in his Ph.D. dissertation, Effects of Power Ultrasound
Treatments on Properties of Longissimus Beef Tissue.
International advisory panel
Forrest Nutter Jr., professor of plant pathology, was invited to serve on an
international advisory panel by the International Maize and Wheat
Improvement Center. The advisory panel examined "Technical Issues Related to
Sampling and Detection of Adventitious Transgenic DNA Sequences" during a
two-day workshop.
NSF career award
Lu Ruan, assistant professor of computer science, has received a National
Science Foundation Career Award. The award is nearly $450,000 over five
years.

Domenico D'Alessandro, assistant professor of mathematics, has received a
National Science Foundation Career Award. The award is $400,000 over five
years.
Second award for device
Jacob Petrich, professor of chemistry, and two colleagues from the National
Animal Disease Center, will receive the 2003 Agricultural Research Services
Technology Transfer Award for a device they developed and patented that
detects feces on fresh meat. The device received an R&D 100 Award in
2000.
Regional champ
Karla Boetel, executive chef for ISU Dining, took first place in the Region
VI "Culinary Challenge" in St. Louis sponsored by the National Association
of College and University Food Services. Boetel will represent Iowa State
and Region VI in the national competition in Las Vegas in July 2004.
Contestants prepare a hot salmon entree with up to two side dishes, in 75
minutes.
Contributor to award-winning book
Carol Fuhler, associate professor of curriculum and instruction, is a
chapter author in a book that received the Association of Educational
Publishers' Golden Lamp Award for Books, the highest honor for educational
books. The book is Young Adult Literature in the Classroom: Reading It,
Teaching It, Loving It. Fuhler's chapter is about the relevancy and
freshness of picture books for middle school students.
Research forum planner
Howard Van Auken, professor of finance, has been appointed to the steering
and paper review committee for an annual research forum sponsored by the
Journal of Small Business Management. The forum will be a one- to two-day
conference at which 10 to 12 research papers will be presented. The papers
also will be published in a special issue of the journal.
