Mexico's foreign minister to discuss global economic issues
Luis Ernesto Derbez, foreign minister of Mexico and an Iowa State alumnus,
will discuss U.S./Mexican relations and other global economic issues at 8
p.m. Monday, Nov. 3, in the Memorial Union Great Hall.
Derbez served as Mexico's economic minister before assuming his current
position.
He spent 14 years with the World Bank, where he was responsible for Chile,
Western and Central Africa, India, Nepal, Bhutan and other areas. While at
the World Bank, he structured and supervised multilateral economic
assistance and structural adjustment programs in Chile, Costa Rica, Honduras
and Guatemala. He also worked on economic recovery programs for Honduras and
Nicaragua after Hurricane Mitch destroyed a substantial part of their
territories and economies.
Derbez received a Ph.D. in economics from Iowa State in 1980.
