In the photo, Inside photographer Bob Elbert is at the Pammel shelter in the former West Pammel Court family student housing neighborhood. The picnic shelter, a Civilian Conservation Corps project, dates to the 1930s; the playground equipment was added sometime later. All saw extensive use through the early 1990s. Today, children from the University Community Childcare are about the only visitors. The new Environmental Health and Safety building, construction of which begins this fall, will not impact the West Pammel picnic area.
