Campus events will mark King holiday
Iowa State's annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday will
begin at noon, Friday, Jan. 17, in the Memorial Union Sun Room. Music will
be provided by members of Shy of a Dozen and First Premiere. Speakers will
include Provost Benjamin Allen, Government of the Student Body president
T.J. Schneider and Black Student Alliance president Brad Johnson. A
reception will follow.
The university's observance also will include a talk by James Cone entitled
"Martin & Malcolm & America: A Dream or a Nightmare" at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan.
27, in the Memorial Union Sun Room. Cone is a distinguished professor of
systematic theology at Union Theological Seminary, New York City. Author of
a book by the same name as his ISU talk, Cone also has written Risks of
Faith: The Emergence of a Black Theology of Liberation 1968-1998, Black
Theology and Black Power, and A Black Theology of Liberation.
