The winter season officially will begin at Iowa State with the annual Festival of Lights celebration Wednesday, Dec. 4.

A short program will start at 5:15 p.m. on the front steps of Beardshear Hall. Preceding it, ISU carillonneur Tin-shi Tam will provide music, and cookies and hot chocolate will be served. The program will include music by ISU choir members, lighting of thousands of decorative lights, and brief remarks by President Gregory Geoffroy and T.J. Schneider, Government of the Student Body president.

Following the program, there will be open houses at the Farm House Museum, the Campanile and University Book Store. Central campus sidewalks will be lined with luminaries. Live reindeer will be tethered on the MacKay south lawn and horse-drawn wagons will carry guests around central campus.

The Farm House Museum open house will include the dedication of a new arbor that is an exact replica of an arbor that existed on the site prior to 1925. The new arbor was funded with a gift from the Class of 2002.

The University Book Store's open house will be held all day. Poinsettias will be sold by the Horticulture Club from noon to 7:30 p.m., treats from the Memorial Union Catering Service will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. and children's stories will be read from 6 to 7 p.m.

Youngsters also can listen to stories in the atrium of the Palmer Building from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Families and staff of the Child Development Lab School and ISU students who are early childhood education majors will be reading.

Other events during the day will include a holiday display at Reiman Gardens from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ($5 for adults, $2 for children ages 7 to 17, and free for ISU students and children under 6) and an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Alumni Association's newly remodeled space in the Memorial Union Alumni Suite.
