Women's club first event is Sept. 16
Iowa State University Women's Club begins its 105th year on Monday, Sept.
16, at a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Northminster Presbyterian
Church social hall, 1416 20th St. Women who are ISU employees, graduate
students or spouses of ISU employees are invited to the event, "Hats Off to
Women," and are encouraged to wear hats. For more information, call

Art dedication is Sept. 24
The newest sculpture in University Museums' "Art on Campus" collection will
be dedicated at noon Tuesday, Sept 24, in front of the Student Services
Building. The piece, titled "Air Spiral," is done in stainless steel. It was
funded by the Iowa Art in State Building Program, with support from several
current and former ISU employees.
United Way campaign under way
A goal of $241,500 has been set for the annual United Way campaign on
campus, which began Sept. 4 and concludes in October. United Way of Story
County distributes funds to 33 partner agencies. Carol Meeks, dean of the
College of Family and Consumer Sciences, is this year's campus campaign
chair.
Reiman to hold plant sale
The Reiman Gardens' fall plant sale will be held, rain or shine, from 9 a.m.
to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Maintenance Building. Houseplants,
perennials, ornamental grasses and herbs will be on sale in limited
quantities. Free admission to the gardens will be given for any plant
purchase.
AccessPlus redesign debuts Sept. 16
The six-year-old AccessPlus Web site, increasingly the place to do
university business, has been redesigned. Several students in a graduate
design class taught by assistant professor Sunghyun Kang took on the
project; the new look debuts Sept. 16.
The goal is to make it easier for the campus community to use the site and
take care of business, whether signing up for classes or checking U-bills,
said Maury Hope, director of Administrative Data Processing.
"We've tested the new site with faculty, staff and students and it's getting
good reviews," Hope said.

Free performance depicts Henry Wallace
American Dreamer, a one-man play based on the life of statesman and
agronomist Henry A. Wallace, will be performed by Iowan Tom Milligan at 7
p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at Fisher Theater in celebration of the ISU agronomy
department's centennial. The play is adapted from a book by former Iowa Sen.
John Culver.
CD/DVD duplication service
The Instructional Technology Center has started a CD and DVD duplication
service. Faculty, staff and students may bring their original CD or DVD
masters to 1200 Communications Building for duplication. More information

Reading to observe Banned Book Week
A reading by Barbara Mack, Greenlee School, will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday,
Sept. 24, in 192 Parks Library, in connection with Banned Books Week (Sept.
21-28). A reception will follow in the Fireplace Reading Room.
Geoffroy, Birt on Talk of Iowa
Food science and human nutrition professor Diane Birt will join President
Gregory Geoffroy on WOI-AM's Talk of Iowa Tuesday, Sept. 17. Birt
will lead a $6 million study on herbal diet supplements. The call-in show
airs from 10 to 11 a.m. on WOI-AM (640). Questions may be sent in advance to

Smiley to celebrate birthday on campus
Former Iowa State distinguished professor of English Jane Smiley, who won a
Pulitzer Prize for her novel A Thousand Acres, will be on campus for
"A Reading and Birthday Party," at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, in the
Brunnier Art Museum. On Friday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m. she will join John Cole,
director of the Library of Congress' National Center for the Book, in the
Memorial Union Sun Room for a discussion of Iowa writers.
Online cash reporting starts Oct. 1
Those responsible for submitting departmental cash reports to the
treasurer's office soon will be doing the job online. The paper report form
will disappear in October. An online tutorial and group training sessions
will help acquaint faculty and staff with the new online system. More info

Faculty forums begin
The first Faculty Forum of the academic year will be "Teaching: Sharing
Ideas and Strategies," from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, in the

Appointment
Jon Van Gerpen, professor of mechanical engineering, to interim
