After five
Ever wonder where your co-workers are headed at the end of the day? This
Inside feature catches up with university employees "after five."
Name: Darren Huntley
By day, he's: Mechanic, Facilities Planning and Management
After five, he's: Modified race car driver
He revved up for racing: The night seven years ago he left his
cousin's pit crew to substitute for another driver.
What gets his motor runnin': A 2001 Air Twister custom-built modified
stock car -- about $15,000 new; about $10,000 per season to maintain.
His sponsors bank on: "Ninety percent of the time, I finish in the
top 10. Usually, I'm racing for $300 to win it all."
The fear before the finish: "I've only rolled the car twice -- just
some bumps and bruises. Nah, I wasn't scared -- just mad, because I knew how
much it would cost to replace everything once I stopped rolling."
