Tickets on sale for new Stephens season
by Linda Charles
In the mood for a Broadway musical? Maybe you'd rather listen to bagpipes?
Or perhaps Shakespeare is more what you have in mind. It all will be at C.Y.
Stephens next season (2002-03).
Tickets are on sale now for the 34th "Season at Stephens," which also will
feature orchestras, ballets, folk dances, Irish music and tango dancing.
Discounts (15 percent off for three or more events during the season) end
Aug. 23.
Broadway productions will include The Music Man (Oct. 15-16), Fosse
(Feb. 1, 2003), Cabaret (Feb. 20, 2003) and The Miracle Worker (May
3, 2003).
For those who prefer Shakespeare, there's A Midsummer Night's Dream
(Feb. 25, 2003), and if opera is your cup of tea, check out Madame
Butterfly (March 13, 2003).
Music buffs can select from a variety of performances. Those in the mood for
orchestras can catch the Venice Baroque Orchestra (Oct. 6) or the Czech
Philharmonic Orchestra (March 4, 2003). Irish music will be featured in a
performance by Cherish the Ladies (Dec. 18). Other musical performances will
be presented by the Band of the Grenadier Guards with the Pipes and Drums of
the Scots Highlanders (Feb. 16, 2003), The Nylons (March 28, 2003) and
Rhythm & Brass (April 4, 2003).
Folk dancing will take center stage when the Georgian State Dance Company
performs (Oct. 3). Ballet lovers can see Coppelia by the Shanghai
Ballet (Oct. 10). Ballet National du Senegal (Nov. 1) will present the
spirit of West Africa through music, song and dance. Tango Buenos Aires
(March 27, 2003), featuring the rhythm and intricate steps of the dance that
was born in the barrios of Buenos Aires, also will make a return trip to
Ames.
Color, light, movement and music will highlight Blast II Shockwave (March 2,
2003), a hybrid of dance, gymnastics, drum-and-bugle corps and color guards.
For the kids, there's contemporary folk artist Tom Chapin (Nov. 16), who
will lead sing-alongs and word games, and teach a song in sign language. The
Kennedy Center Imagination Celebration on Tour will present Hans Christian
Andersen's The Nightingale (Feb. 23, 2003).
