Day care available for sick children
The Comfort Zone offers Iowa State students, faculty and staff a place to
take their children when they are too sick to go to day care or school. The
staff, part of the University Community Childcare program, cares for
children ages 6 months to 12 years with minor, short-term illnesses. The
recently renovated facility is open 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through
Friday. It is closed during university office holidays and the summer
months. Rates are based on income and pre-registration is required. For a
pre-registration packet or more information, contact the Comfort Zone, 1019

E-mail etiquette launches 'Women in Touch' series
The spring "Women in Touch" series will feature sessions on e-mail
etiquette, office organization, and race and gender issues. All sessions
will begin at noon in the Memorial Union.
Scott Chadwick, Greenlee School of Communication, will discuss "E-mail
Etiquette" on Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Campanile Room. "Organize Your
Office, Manage Your Time" will be the topic for Mary Sigman, a professional
speaker and success coach, on Wednesday, March 20, in the Sun Room. Beverlyn
Lundy Allen, sociology, will finish up the series with a talk on "Resisting
Shadowed Spotlights: Race, Gender and Place in Academia" on Tuesday, April
23, in the Sun Room.
Cost for each session is $12 and includes lunch. Registration is available

Next ISU solar car has a name
PrISUm Spectrum will be the name of Iowa State's seventh solar car. Spectrum
was selected from among more than 80 names submitted in a naming contest by
Team PrISUm, the student group that designs, builds and races solar cars.
The team plans to race Spectrum in the American Solar Challenge, a
cross-country race in the summer of 2003.
Student Affairs review completed
A special Faculty Senate committee has completed its review of the Office of
Student Affairs and vice president Thomas Hill, said John Schuh, educational
leadership and policies and chair of the review committee. Faculty Senate
bylaws call for the senate to evaluate administrative offices and their
administrators every five years. Schuh said the final report on the office
was shared with the Faculty Senate and others as laid out in the Faculty
Handbook guidelines. The evaluation of Hill, who came to Iowa State in
1997, was shared with the university president.
Learning communities workshop is May 13-14
The fourth annual ISU Learning Communities Institute, "Seasons of Success,"
will be held May 13-14 at the Scheman Building. A special emphasis for this
year's institute will be working time for teams. More information about the

Open house Feb. 15 for Intensive English/Orientation Program
Faculty and staff of the Intensive English and Orientation Program are
holding an open house to celebrate bringing staff and programs together in
one location. The open house is 3 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, in the
Landscape Architecture Building. President Geoffroy will give remarks at
3:30 p.m.
Riders sought
Riders are wanted for the Boone to Ames Iowa State carpool. The car arrives
at 8 a.m. and leaves at 5 p.m. Riders are picked up at their homes and
dropped off at their work places on central campus. Cost depends on the
number of riders, and payroll deduction is available. For more information,

Hawthorn Court name change official in April
The Hawthorn Court student apartment community on the north side of campus
will be renamed in honor of Charles Frederiksen, director of the ISU
residence department from 1967 to 1996. The official renaming ceremony for
Frederiksen Court will be held during Veishea week in mid-April. However,
for reasons involving U.S. Postal Service operations in that neighborhood,
the name change won't be completed until May 15. Effective May 15:
- Hawthorn Court will be renamed Frederiksen Court.
- The Hawthorn Court Community Center will be renamed Frederiksen Court
Community Center.
- The Hawthorn Market & Caf, a dining and shopping service located in
what currently is known as the Hawthorn Court Community Center, will
not change its name.

Poetry reading on sustaining land and community
A poetry reading on "Sustaining Land and Community" will begin at 7 p.m.
Thursday, Feb. 28, in the Brunnier Gallery. The reading is part of a
sustainable agriculture colloquium for graduate students. Reading will be
Mary Swander, Deb Marquart and Sheryl St. Germain, all ISU English, and
Twyla Hansen, a Nebraska horticulturalist.

Lunch with the basketball coaches
Cyclone women's head basketball coach Bill Fennelly and men's head coach
Larry Eustachy each will hold another lunch for ISU employees this month in
the Memorial Union. Fennelly's lunch is from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18,
in the Great Hall. Eustachy's next lunch is from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday,
Feb. 21, in the Sun Room. Bring your lunch and talk to the coaches about
their teams.
