Fungi and lichens
2001 marks the 130th anniversary of the founding of the Ada Hayden
Herbarium, in 1871. Pictured is Richard Pohl in 1951, herbarium curator at
that time. The herbarium includes more than 400,000 specimens of vascular
plants, bryophytes, fungi and lichens. It is named for ISU botanist and
prairie specialist, Ada Hayden, the first woman to earn a Ph.D. at Iowa
State, in 1917. The herbarium is located in Bessey Hall; its curator is
Deborah Lewis. Photo courtesy of University Archives, ISU Library.
