May 28, 2009 FY09 employee furloughs, gifts nears $600,000by Anne Krapfl As of Iowa State's May 21 payroll, 291 university employees had indicated their intention to participate in the voluntary furlough/leave without pay option in this fiscal year. This figure includes the 28 administrators and four athletics department leaders. The estimated total savings to the university is $498,052. In mid-January, president Gregory Geoffroy approved voluntary furloughs and leave without pay as a strategy for meeting a 1.5 percent ($4.25 million) reversion in state funding for this year. An earlier 1 percent reduction was covered at the university administration level. Employee participation in the gifting program at the ISU Foundation, set up for the same reason, remains unchanged from April: 102 employees gave a total of $92,208. Combined, the two options have drawn 393 employee participants with total savings/gifts of $590,260. |
