Engineering dean search is under way

Executive vice president and provost Elizabeth Hoffman has identified a 20-member committee to search for the next dean of the College of Engineering.

The successful candidate will succeed Mark Kushner, who left Sept. 1 to join the faculty at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. James Bernard, Anson Marston Distinguished Professor of Engineering and a 25-year member of the mechanical engineering faculty, is serving as interim dean.

The search committee met for the first time earlier this week. Finalist candidates likely will visit campus next March. The new dean is expected to be in place by July 1, 2009.

Labh Hira, dean of the College of Business, will chair the search committee. Joining him are:

  • James Alleman, professor and chair, civil, construction and environmental engineering
  • Mary Bilstad, program coordinator, mechanical engineering
  • Robert Brown, Anson Marston Distinguished Professor in Engineering (mechanical engineering) and Iowa Farm Bureau director of the Bioeconomy Institute
  • Julie Dickerson, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering
  • Leann Faidley, assistant professor of mechanical engineering
  • Karl Gschneidner, Anson Marston Distinguished Professor in Engineering (materials science and engineering)
  • Jay Harmon, professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering
  • Rudy Herrmann, president and CEO (retired), Dover Resources Inc., Tulsa, Okla. (alumnus)
  • David Holger, associate provost for academic programs, dean of the Graduate College, and professor of aerospace engineering
  • Michael Kalkhoff, undergraduate student, chemical engineering
  • Katherine Lawler, graduate student, materials science and engineering
  • Michael Mack, senior vice president and chief financial officer, Deere and Co., Moline, Ill. (alumnus)
  • Max Porter, professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering
  • Diane Rover, associate dean for academic programs and budget, College of Engineering, and professor of electrical and computer engineering
  • Camille Sloan Schroeder, program coordinator, engineering undergraduate programs
  • Martha Selby, adjunct assistant professor of materials science and engineering
  • Jackie Shanks, professor of chemical engineering
  • Patricia Thiel, Distinguished Professor in Liberal Arts and Sciences (chemistry)
  • Stephen Vardeman, University Professor of statistics and industrial and manufacturing systems engineering
