Nearly 800 expected to graduate this summer

by Anne Krapfl

Iowa State will award an estimated 789 degrees at the conclusion of the summer term. A combined graduate and undergraduate commencement ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, in Hilton. All participating students will walk across the stage as their names are read.

Following are early estimates of the numbers of students receiving degrees next month.

Bachelor's degree recipients: 481
Master's degree recipients: 198
Doctoral degree recipients: 110

David Miles, president of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, since December, will address the graduates. Miles currently serves as managing director of The Miles Group, a family investment business. Previously, he served as executive officer of Countryside Renewable Energy Inc., a Des Moines company that consolidated independent ethanol plants into one organization. He also had executive posts with several investment firms, including Principal Mutual Funds, AMCORE Financial and Investors Management Group.

Miles earned a bachelor's degree in public administration from Drake University, and a master's degree in public policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government and doctoral degree in law, both from Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.

Tickets are not required for the university ceremony. Colleges don't hold their own convocations in the summer as they do at the end of the fall and spring terms.
