Outdoor alertWorkers installed the first set of emergency warning equipment on a 50-foot pole west of the Forker Building June 30. The campus' new warning system has five towers; other locations are at the Vet Med campus, the east sides of Jack Trice Stadium and Beyer Hall, and the south edge of the Schilletter University Village residence neighborhood. The outdoor system comes with the usual array of warning tones, as well as the option to broadcast live or pre-recorded messages as far as 4,000 feet. ISU officials hope to test the new outdoor emergency warning system at approximately 1 p.m. Thursday, July 3. The test would begin with a 10-second siren, followed by a digital voice recording ("This is a test . . ."), concluding with another 10-second siren. It likely will be repeated several times. The test will be postponed if the weather in Ames is threatening at that time. Photo by Bob Elbert. |
