Search begins for director of sustainability programs

A national search is under way for Iowa State's first director of sustainability programs, and both faculty and P&S staff members are encouraged to apply. President Gregory Geoffroy announced last month he would create the position as part of the university's "Live Green!" energy efficiency and conservation initiative.

The director's position is a full-time one in the department of facilities planning and management for a pilot period of three years, at which time the office and position will be reviewed.

The director's duties include:

  • Guide development of a university-wide plan for sustainable practices, standards and policies
  • Coordinate a $3 million revolving loan fund for university projects related to renewable energy and energy conservation
  • Work with colleges and other units engaged in environmental projects to better coordinate those efforts and share ideas about successful ones
  • Develop a university-wide inventory of academic programs and sustainability concepts that contribute to the learning environment; share it with internal and external audiences
  • Serve on the president's Advisory Committee on Energy Efficiency and Global Climate Change and act as a liaison to other Iowa State groups focused on sustainability

Executive assistant to the president Tahira Hira is chairing a six-member search committee. She said committee members would begin reviewing applications the first week in August, with the intent to conduct interviews in the second half of August and name a director by early to mid-September.

Applicants must apply online via the ISU "Job Opportunities" Web site. Details about the position and the application process are online at this site.

Questions may be directed to Hira, 4-2042, e-mail:
