April 4, 2008 Sesquicentennial begins to wrap upby Paula Van Brocklin Iowa State's 150th celebration was launched at last year's Veishea. So it's only fitting the sesquicentennial bids farewell at Veishea 2008. A brief sesquicentennial concluding ceremony is planned Saturday, April 12, following the Veishea parade (around 1 or 1:30 p.m.) south of the campanile. Scheduled events include talks from President Gregory Geoffroy and ISU alumnus and NASA astronaut Clayton Anderson; a salute to military science's strong role in university history; the recognition of Iowa State's first "True and Valiant Award" winner; a presentation by U.S. Senator Tom Harkin's staff of the flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol on March 22, Iowa State's birthday; and the announcement of a new student leadership award to commemorate the sesquicentennial. If you can't attend the ceremony in person, it will be re-broadcast on WOI 640 AM at noon Monday, April 14, and at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 15. The radio program also will include interviews with Tanya Zanish-Belcher, associate professor, library; Carole Custer, director of university marketing; and Tahira Hira, executive assistant to the president. The program, which was produced by ISU Extension, also will be available online beginning April 14. |
