Campus events bring attention to national crime of sexual assault
During April, the YWCA Ames-ISU and a number of departments and student
organizations will join others locally and nationally to observe Sexual
Assault Awareness Month.
According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network:
- Every 2 minutes someone is sexually assaulted in the United
States.
- 1 in 6 women and 1 in 33 men will be sexually assaulted.
- College-age women are 4 times more likely to be sexually
assaulted.
- 60 percent of sexual assaults are not reported to the police.
A list of campus activities to raise awareness of sexual violence

Monday, April 7
- 10 a.m.--2 p.m., Flag display, Story County Sexual Assault Response
Team will display flags representing every individual they have
assisted, south of campanile.
- 11 a.m.--2 p.m., "These Hands are Not for Hitting," support
non-violence by imprinting your hand on a large canvas and signing the
pledge form, central campus.
Tuesday, April 8
- 11 a.m.--2 p.m., "These Hands are Not for Hitting," see April
7.
- 12--1 p.m., Roundtable discussion, "Culture of Fear," what sexual
assault is and how it affects women and girls, moderator Diane
Price-Herndl, ISU women's studies program, 3505 MU.
Friday, April 11
- 10 a.m.--2 p.m., Flag display, see April 7, south of Parks
Library.
Monday, April 14
- 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Sexual Assault Awareness Month display, information,
teal ribbons, ground level booth, MU.
Tuesday, April 15
- 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Clothesline project, display of T-shirts designed by
survivors of violence and family members or friends of victims of
violence (participants may create a T-shirt inside the Sloss House),
west lawn, Sloss House (rain date April 17).
Monday, April 21
- 2-10 p.m., Sign making, for April 22 rally and march, The Workspace,
east basement, MU.
Tuesday, April 22
- 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Petition signing, "I Have Hope," for Iowa's
U.S. Senators, in support of funding for the U.S. Violence Against Women
Act and advocating for more awareness of the systematic rape of women in
the Democratic Republic of Congo, west lawn, Sloss House
- 2-5 p.m., Sign making, see April 21
- 6:30 p.m. Rally, "Take Back the Night," to promote awareness of
violence against women, children and families, followed by a march at
approximately 7:15 p.m., west terrace, MU.
- 8:15 p.m., Open mic, "Rant, Rage and Reflect," share stories, poems
music, Maintenance Shop, MU.
