Nutcracker Ballet is Dec. 7-9

More than 200 local dancers are featured in the Iowa State Center's Nutcracker Ballet this weekend at Stephens. Bulgarian-born and trained professional dancers Violeta Angelova and Momchil Mladenov will dance the parts of the sugar plum fairy and cavalier, respectively. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7-8; and at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9. Tickets are $16.50 or $18.50, with a $2 discount for ISU students, children and seniors, and are available through Ticketmaster.

Recycling volunteers sought

The campus effort to collect phonebooks for recycling from building loading docks still is in need of volunteers. Volunteers will gather at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, in the General Services Building (by vending machines) and be assigned to one of five truck routes. The work takes a couple of hours and includes refreshments. To volunteer, contact Norm Hill, 4-5752.

Open forums for EOD candidates

The campus community is invited to meet two candidates for ISU's position of assistant director for equal opportunity and diversity during open forums next week. Both forums are from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in Catt Hall. Forums will be held:

  • Dec. 10 for Inta Bingham, human resources director/risk manager for the city of Page, Ariz.
  • Dec. 14 for Francesca Galarraga, diversity program manager for Rockwell-Collins, Cedar Rapids

Out with the old

The athletics department is cleaning out the closets to make way for its new logo with an equipment sale in the Bergstrom Indoor Athletics Facility Dec. 8 (9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.). Merchandise includes uniforms, sweats, shirts, hats and helmets.

ClubFest II registration now open

ClubFest II will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, in the Memorial Union. Some of Iowa State's 600-plus student clubs and campus organizations will be represented. Participating clubs and organizations must register by Jan. 14. Questions about ClubFest II can be sent to clubfest@iastate.edu.

Graduation reception for international students

International students who are graduating this semester will be honored during a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, in the Memorial Union Sun Room. All are welcome. Students will have the opportunity to express appreciation to those who helped them reach their academic goals. Choy Leow, a native of Malaysia who received bachelor's (1985) and master's (1988) degrees in architecture from Iowa State, will speak. Leow now serves as director of architecture for the Allina Hospitals and Clinics system in the Twin Cities.

Science lectures

The 86-year-old Osborn Research Club has opened the lecture portion of its monthly meeting to the public. Donald Beitz, Distinguished Professor in biochemistry, biophysics and molecular biology, will discuss clinical use of stem cells at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, in the Memorial Union Pioneer Room. Gene Takle, professor of atmospheric science and of agricultural meteorology, will discuss "Climate Change: How We Got Here and What We Do Now" at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, in the Memorial Union Cardinal Room. Lunch with the coaches

Cyclone head basketball coaches will meet with fans and answer questions about the season during upcoming "Coach Talks" in the Memorial Union. Meet with men's coach Greg McDermott from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, in the Great Hall. Meet with women's coach Bill Fennelly from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, in the Sun Room. Bring your lunch and your questions. Door prizes are awarded. Future "Coach Talk" dates are Jan. 8 and Feb. 5 (Fennelly), and Jan. 30 and Feb. 19 (McDermott).

WebCT shutdown

The WebCT GOLD system will be shut down from 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, through 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, for an upgrade to a new version of the Oracle database server and several software updates. These database and software updates are critical for the continued growth and use of the WebCT GOLD system. An updated announcement will be posted on the WebCT public page when the system is available.

Victorian Holidays at Farm House canceled

University Museums announces the cancellation of the Victorian Holidays exhibition and the Dec. 9 holiday celebration at the Farm House Museum on central campus. The Farm House Museum remains open by appointment only.
