Gardens' fall season extended to Dec. 31

by Teddi Barron, News Service

In late September, gardens director Teresa McLaughlin announced that a $200,000 operating budget deficit would close the butterfly wing from Nov. 1 to April 1 and the rest of the gardens on weekends during those months.

Reiman Gardens now will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Dec. 31. It will be closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Roy Reiman said during ISU's homecoming activities Oct. 19-21 that "hundreds of people" talked to him and his wife about the gardens' finances.

"Because ISU and Reiman Gardens are very dear to us, we thought this is one of the best holiday presents we could gift," he said.

Their gift will fund operational and programming activities for two months. This includes keeping the butterfly wing open, providing winter decorations and festivities.

"We are grateful for their continuing commitment and increased support," McLaughlin said.

Holiday traditions that are back on the calendar include Blossoms of Light (Nov. 30), outdoor holiday lights and the poinsettia display in the conservatory.

Reiman Gardens will remain available for private parties seven days a week all winter.
