UBS launches vintage collection

by Erin Rosacker

Feeling nostalgic during Iowa State's sesquicentennial year of celebration? Now you can don your favorite logo from the past, as the University Book Store rolls out its fall merchandise collection that features vintage looks from ISU's past.

This 1960 photo was taken in the Memorial Union commons, but University Book Store staff had it digitally altered to show the students wearing clothing with today's designs. The photo is on the cover of the UBS catalog. Photo courtesy of University Archives and UBS.

"The licensing department brought back the ability to use some of those older logos that we hadn't used for a while to celebrate the 150th, so it made it really easy for us to come up with some great designs," said Amy DeLashmutt, UBS marketing supervisor.

The merchandise, which started arriving July 1, includes clothing that features the intertwined "ISC" logo, the various renditions of the cardinal bird that morphed into today's Cy, the "Cyclones" script from the Jim Walden football era and throwback shades of cardinal and gold.

"Some of it is really, really vintage with the old logos such as the Iowa State College logo," DeLashmutt said. "It's a real old gold color, what you would have seen at the time. Some of it, you don't even notice that it's vintage."

She said that all of their vendors created merchandise using the vintage theme this year, most of it clothing and gift items. The spring line, which also will feature the vintage look, starts arriving in November.

You can still get the modern-day merchandise and the special line of garments that sport the sesquicentennial logo. But the UBS will keep an eye on the popularity of the vintage line.

"We're just going to see how the line does and then decide for next year," DeLashmutt said. "We'll see what the trends are, and we'll watch the college market."

The UBS has a display featuring the vintage products in its newly opened addition, but DeLashmutt said new products are being added to the inventory and the Website as they arrive. Clothing items range in price from T-shirts for $9.99 to high-end clothing and jackets for around $65.
