Discuss 'Flight of the Creative Class'

The Flight of the Creative Class, a book examining global competition for creative talent, will be the subject of discussion at a brown bag lunch Aug. 24 (11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., 3505 Memorial Union). Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to read the Richard Florida book before attending the discussion, which is sponsored by the Advisory Committee for Program Planning and Diversity Coordination. Questions may be directed to Melanie Smith, melanie6@iastate.edu. Florida is the Helen LeBaron Hilton Chair in Human Sciences this fall. He will give a lecture at 8 p.m. Sept. 19 in Stephens.

Ames arts preview is Aug. 26

The Iowa State Center, in partnership with the Ames Community Arts Council, will host its third annual "Sample the Arts at Stephens" from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, in Stephens. More than 20 local performing and creative arts organizations will exhibit their upcoming events and many will offer live performances during the afternoon. There will be ticket giveaways and a special appearance by Kim Brown (also known as the "real D.W." and Arthur writer/illustrator Marc Brown's sister) beginning at 3:30 p.m. This family event is free and open to the public.

Imagination Movers canceled

Due to the performers' television production schedule, the Sept. 13 performance of Imagination Movers at Stephens has been canceled. This was part of the 2007-08 Season at Stephens. Refunds are available at the point of purchase. For more information, call the Iowa State Center, 4-3347.

Town rooms to be dedicated

Two rooms in Town Engineering recently have been renovated, and the civil, construction and environmental engineering department will dedicate them during a 3 p.m. ceremony Thursday, Aug. 30, on the Town Engineering south lawn. The facilities are the Kiewit Student Study Center and the Highway Design Classroom, sponsored by Kiewit, Snyder & Associates, Howard R. Green Company, HDR and Gerald and Audrey Olson. Destination Iowa State is Aug. 16-18

Destination Iowa State, a program designed to ease the college transition for first-year students, runs from Thursday, Aug. 16, to Saturday, Aug. 18. This marks the ninth year of the program. New students are teamed up with current Iowa State students, and these teams attend various sessions to learn about academic success, money management, diversity and campus opportunities. They also enjoy numerous social events just for new Iowa State students. On Saturday afternoon, five community service projects will be completed, benefiting local and international agencies.

Semester permits for the MU ramp

Fall 2007 parking permits are being sold at the MU main desk during normal business hours. Cost is $173 for unlimited parking Aug. 5-Dec. 15. Permit holders use a proximity card to enter and exit the ramp; no tickets or stops at a pay station are required.

Geoffroy on NCAA Executive Committee

President Gregory Geoffroy was appointed to the NCAA Executive Committee, the organization's highest governance body. During his two-year term, Geoffroy also will serve on the Division I Men's Basketball Academic Enhancement Group, a special purpose committee.

Watch for traffic congestion

Students living in the residence halls this year will be moving back Aug. 14-17. The department of residence suggests that faculty and staff avoid areas where move-in congestion may occur, including Union Drive and Beach Road.
