Input period for budget model nears a close

by Anne Krapfl

The review and comment period for a proposed new budget model for the university is winding down this week. President Gregory Geoffroy asked his cabinet members, college deans, the Faculty Senate and Professional and Scientific Council for their input by Jan. 18. Both the senate and council approved response reports in the last week that endorse the proposed model, with some qualifiers.

"I greatly appreciate the detailed attention members of the Faculty Senate, P&S Council and campus leaders have given to the budget model over many months," Geoffroy said. "Their comments are helpful to me as I consider my decision on implementation of the model."

In early November, Geoffroy asked these groups and individuals to respond to the proposed model and implementation schedule that was recommended in the Oct. 31, 2006, report of the Budget Model Review and Implementation Committee (BMRIC).

BMRIC, which is chaired by LAS associate dean Doug Epperson, is on schedule to submit its next report to Geoffroy by Monday, Jan. 22. That report will include an update on issues cited in the October report and how they have evolved over the last several months. It also will include an update on the proposed implementation plan and schedule.

Geoffroy said he expects to make a decision shortly on adopting the new budget model and the implementation process. If he gives it the green light, work toward implementing the new model will continue, with full implementation likely for FY09, which begins July 1, 2008.
