Accreditation team seeks comments on DPS

An accreditation team will receive public comments on ISU's department of public safety in a Dec. 11 campus forum (7 p.m., Benton Auditorium, Scheman). Comments also can be called in or mailed. Accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies is a highly prized recognition of law enforcement excellence. More.

Kids and parents get fit

Kids ages 5-17 and their parents can improve their fitness levels and learn healthy habits this winter in the "Swim and Gym" and "Fit Kids" programs offered by the department of health and human performance. The fitness activities and nutrition programs meet in Forker Saturday mornings and after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Harry Svec funeral is Dec. 8

Harry Svec, Distinguished Professor of chemistry and professor emeritus, died Nov. 28. The funeral begins at 1 p.m. Dec. 8 at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, Ames. A buffet reception and celebration will follow at 5:30 p.m. in the church's social hall, with a 7 p.m. program. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the chemistry department building fund or the Ames Historical Society.

Svec was associated with Iowa State for 42 years. As a graduate student in 1941, he was enlisted by Frank Spedding to assist with developing a uranium refinement process for the Manhattan Project.

Geoffroy, Myers on radio

President Gregory Geoffroy and professor of food science and human nutrition Deland Myers will be guests at 9 a.m. on Talk of Iowa Tuesday, Dec. 19, on WOI Radio (AM 640).

Openings at lab school

The Child Development Laboratory School has openings beginning spring semester in the full-day program for 3-, 4- or 5-year-old children. Priority will be given to children with identified special needs. For more information, contact Malisa Rader, 4-3040, or go online.

Reception for graduating international students

A reception for graduating (undergraduate and graduate) international students will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, in the Memorial Union Cardinal Room. Speakers will include vice president for student affairs Tom Hill, alumni association president Jeff Johnson and Leow Choi, a former ISU international student who is director of architecture for Allina Hospitals and Clinics in Minneapolis. There will be refreshments and music. Academic advisers and major professors of graduating students especially are invited to attend.

Toys for Tots

The naval science department and Navy ROTC are collecting new, unwrapped toys for the U.S. Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program. Collection boxes are in rooms 3 and 4 Armory through Dec. 20. Or call 4-6050 and an ROTC member will pick up your donation.
