Help collect old phonebooks; muscles not a requirement

Are you and your co-workers looking for an opportunity to give this holiday season? The university's recycling committee is looking for volunteers to collect old phonebooks from campus buildings Saturday morning, Dec. 2.

"Recycling phonebooks makes total sense and the ISU community does a great job of setting its old phonebooks aside -- more than 10 tons worth last year," said Norm Hill, manager of Central Stores. But he also noted that it would add an expense to the project to use university staff for the pick-up portion, which is why he relies on volunteers.

You don't have to be a power lifter for the job, Hill said, although volunteers are welcome to eat free donuts and coffee as if they were. Volunteers of all sizes and shoulder dimensions are welcome, he said. For the second year, students from ISU's Navy ROTC program will supplement the volunteer team. To volunteer, contact Hill, 4-5752.

The drive starts at 9 a.m. Dec. 2 and will conclude before noon. Phonebooks will have been moved outside the previous evening by building employees. Volunteer teams will transfer the phonebooks to pickup trucks and then to a large trailer located in the southeast parking lot of the Towers residence halls.
