Holiday sharingA giving tree in 103 Lab of Mechanics contains wishes from children in the Ames area who are in need of family support services. Givers fulfill one of the wishes or give cash donations to the Ames/ISU YMCA to purchase gifts. Gifts should be brought (unwrapped) to 103 Lab of Mechanics by Dec. 1. Nominations soughtThe Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching announces the Sesquicentennial Hubbard Award of $18,000 to recognize an ISU faculty member for teaching excellence. Applications and nominations are due Dec. 11. More information is online. CYtation nominations soughtDec. 1 is the next nomination deadline for the P&S CYtation Awards. This award recognizes individuals who have performed above and beyond the call of duty, done something extraordinarily well, or acted in such a way as to make a very real difference at Iowa State. The nomination needs to be for work done within the past year. Winners of the award receive a one-year family membership to Reiman Gardens. No Little Shop of HorrorsThe Little Shop of Horrors production scheduled for Dec. 1 in Stephens Auditorium has been canceled. Volunteers needed for Ames Lab/ISU science bowlThe annual Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University High School Science Bowl will be Saturday, Jan. 27. Approximately 90 volunteers, both scientific and nonscientific, are needed to serve as moderators, judges, timekeepers and scorekeepers for the fast-paced event that will host 48 student teams from around the state. Competition sites are Howe, Hoover, Marston and Black Engineering. $25,000 award for innovationIowa State has received a $25,000 award for innovative practices in career flexibility from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. ISU was selected for a creative database and tracking system to quantify benefits of flexible career policies. See www.provost.iastate.edu (News and Announcements). DeathLinda Charles, former writer in University Relations and associate editor of Inside Iowa State, died Nov. 11 of cancer. Charles retired from Iowa State last December. Her family has requested that memorial contributions be given to the Ames Animal Shelter. |
