Spooky campanile

Spooky fun meets history on night walk

by Anne Krapfl

University Museums will sponsor its second annual Haunted Iowa State walk Wednesday, Oct. 25.

In a new take on the former "Halloween Walk," more than 40 volunteers share -- or portray -- haunting stories and people from Iowa State history. The walking tour includes the campanile; Memorial Union; Beardshear, Catt and MacKay halls; Farm House Museum and the ISU cemetery. It is primarily an outdoor tour, with a few short detours into buildings.

Participants should dress for the weather, bring a flashlight (for the cemetery portion of the tour, where there is scant to no overhead lighting) and meet at the campanile at 6:30 p.m.

"We had 370 people join us for the event last year," said Allison Sheridan, education specialist for University Museums. Participants will divide into smaller groups and fan out in different directions, she said.

"We have a great time with this," she said. "We share a lot of Iowa State lore and legend, and we'll run into a few ghosts at the different stations."

Coffee, hot chocolate and treats will be served at the Farm House Museum, where a fortune teller also will keep camp.

The Haunted Iowa State walk is free and open to the public.
