Latino heritage celebration continues into October

They call it Latino Heritage Month, but ISU students who plan the traditional celebration of cultures on campus needed more than 30 days to get it all in. The celebration, which began with a Sept. 16 opening festival, includes a month and a half of activities, including a film festival, cultural nights, dance and food.

Remaining activities:

Friday, September 22

• 7:30 p.m., Brazilian Night, dinner and music (call 572-4091 for ticket information), 9 p.m. free music performance, Sun Room, MU.

Saturday, September 23

• 10 a.m., Weekend Voyagers, Sigma Lambda Gamma members teach children games and activities on the Latin American culture, free, Ames Public Library, 556-6959.

Wednesday, September 27

• Noon-2 p.m., Sabor Latino, food-tasting event, cuisine from Latin American countries, free, LeBaron Hall lounge, 4-0532.

Thursday and Friday, September 28-29

• 8 p.m., Latino Film Festival, Frida bio-drama about Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, free, Pioneer Room, MU, 4-8081.

Saturday, September 30

• 6 p.m., Noche Puertorriquea (Puerto Rican Night), banquet, $5, community center, University Village, 451-9760.

Wednesday, October 4

• 7-8 p.m., Dia de la Raza Csmica (Day of the Cosmic Race), panel of professors and community members discuss the difference between the terms "Latino" and "Hispanic," free, Gallery Room, MU, 4-3231.

Sunday, October 8

• 6:30-8:30 p.m., Noche de Cultura (Night of Culture), Latin American food and performances, $3, Great Hall, MU, 4-3231 to reserve tickets.

Thursday, November 2

• 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), event will include shrines in tribute to loved ones, Oak Room, MU, 4-3231.
