ABE awards

Carl Bern, H. Mark Hanna and Jacek Koziel, all members of the agricultural and biosystems engineering department, were recognized at the annual meeting of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. Bern, a University Professor, was cited for his contributions in the development of Standards. Hanna, an extension agricultural engineer, received the Rain Bird Engineering Concept of the Year award for development of the Impellicone anhydrous ammonia manifold. Koziel earned an Honorable Mention Paper Award for his piece on odors and beef feedyards.

National officer

Donald Simonson, professor of music and chair of the vocal/choral division, has been elected to a two-year term as vice president of the National Teachers of Singing (NATS). He will coordinate the biennial NATS artist award competition. Earlier this year, Simonson was named a Master Teacher by NATS, a distinction given to less than 1 percent of members.

Iowa Author award

Mary Swander, Distinguished Professor in Liberal Arts and Sciences and professor of English, has received a Des Moines Public Library Foundation's 2006 Iowa Author Award. The award is given to contemporary authors with strong ties to Iowa and nationally recognized published work.
