Alumni award deadline is Aug. 1

The deadline to submit nominations for the Distinguished Alumni Award (formerly the Distinguished Achievement Award) and the Honorary Alumni Award is Tuesday Aug. 1. Poster presentation

Summer interns in the Program for Women in Science and Engineering will share summer research projects in a poster presentation from 1 to 3 p.m. July 28 in the Molecular Biology Building. Presentation of certificates will be from 1 to 2 p.m. in the auditorium. A reception and poster viewing will be from 2 to 3 p.m. in the atrium. The event is open to the public.

University Committees Web site

A new University Committees Web site ( provides information about university-wide standing committees. The information and search capabilities will be especially useful for persons charged with appointing members to committees. Updates for the site should be submitted at the beginning of each fall semester and as changes occur. Updates can be submitted via an online form on the site. Your help is needed in assuring that membership and other information remains current.

Orientation for first-time international TAs

The Graduate College's SPEAK/TEACH Program is offering a seminar on the U.S. classroom for first-time international TAs. It will be offered twice -- Aug. 10 and Aug. 14 -- from 2 to 4:30 p.m. in 160 Carver. Topics include:

  • How undergraduate classrooms at Iowa State may differ from those in other cultures, particularly students' expectations and relationships with TAs and faculty.
  • Strategies to communicate effectively, including video excerpts of successful TAs teaching at ISU.

Faculty orientation registration under way

Online registration is open for ISU's New Faculty Orientation and University Teaching Seminar (Aug. 14-16). Seminars are scheduled for new tenure-eligible faculty (Aug. 14 at Scheman; Aug. 15 at Gateway Hotel), teaching assistants (Aug. 15-16 at Gateway Hotel), and all other new staff and any faculty in their first three years at ISU (Aug. 15 at Gateway Hotel). There is no cost; meals are provided. Registration is available online.
