Honors

Council of Economic Advisors

Governor Thomas Vilsack appointed Tahira Hira, assistant to the president for external relations and executive administration, to the state Council of Economic Advisors. She will serve a one-year term.

Winning photographs

University photographer Bob Elbert recently received first-, second- and third-place recognition in a monthly image contest of the University Photographers' Association of America. Elbert currently sits in fourth place in the year-long competition.

International research award

Joel Coats, professor of entomology and toxicology, received the International Award for Research in Agrochemicals from the American Chemical Society. A one-day symposium in honor of Coats was held as part of the society's 231st national meeting and exposition in March. Several of Coats' former students joined him at the symposium.

National planning group

Levon Esters, assistant professor in ag education and studies, has been appointed to a national committee by the National Academies Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources to help organize a two-day leadership summit in October. The summit will focus on helping universities attract, retain and prepare students for careers in agriculture and science, in response to the expectation that there will be more jobs than graduates in agriculture each of the next five years.

Golf manager award

Tess Balsley, club house manager at Veenker Memorial Golf Course, was named 2005 Club House Manager of the Year by the Iowa Golf Association.
