Women and philanthropy workshop is May 16

Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz, senior vice president of Charles Schwab & Co., will give the keynote address during the ISU Foundation's annual Women and Philanthropy Workshop May 16 (8 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Scheman Building). No phishing allowed

Information Technology Services is noticing an increase in phishing e-mails, which are designed to obtain personal or business financial information. A scam using the Iowa Credit Union League has been particularly alluring to users. ISU employees and students are reminded to delete these e-mails without clicking on any links. 4-H day camp

The Iowa 4-H Center, Madrid, is offering day camp by the week for children ages 6-10 years for eight weeks (June 12-Aug. 4). Each week of camp has a theme (ex., rainforest safari, dinosaurs). Day campers will be picked up each morning in Ames, Boone, Ankeny and Madrid. 4-H membership is not required. Road, parking changes for state Special Olympics

Iowa State is the site for the Iowa Special Olympics Summer Games May 18-20. To accommodate athletes and spectators, a few traffic changes will be implemented:

  • Beach Road will be closed to through traffic from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday, May 18-19.
  • The Iowa State Center parking lots and South Fourth Street between Elwood Drive and Beach Avenue will be closed Thursday, May 18, for cycling events. Commuter parking will be moved to the east stadium parking lots and Cy-Ride will be routed through those lots.
  • Several campus lots (general staff) will be reserved for Special Olympics visitors on Friday, May 19. They are: Lot 3 (between Beyer and Howe halls), 50A (west of Forker), and 57 and 100 (the west and south lots at Lied Center). 24-hour reserve permits for these lots will be honored.

Free lesson in Irish dancing

Learn the fundamental steps of Irish folk dance from the pros. Members of the Trinity Irish Dance Company will lead a class in Irish dancing at noon Friday, April 28, in 196 Forker. The class is free and open to the public. The dance group will perform that evening at 7:30 p.m. at Stephens. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster.

Free to ISU faculty, staff: 2006 Bioethics Institute

The 2006 Bioethics Institute at Reiman Gardens June 5-9 is for faculty and staff who want to incorporate life science ethics into their courses and extension activities. Plenary speakers are Temple Grandin of Colorado State University, renowned animal welfare specialist who advocates humane design of slaughter facilities; and Paul Thompson, Michigan State University, a leading scholar on agricultural ethics. Last newspaper of the semester

Inside Iowa State will move to its summer schedule in May, publishing online-only issues of the faculty-staff newspaper every three weeks. The newsprint edition of the paper will return the first week of fall classes in late August. Online-only dates this summer are: May 18, June 8, June 29, July 20 and Aug. 10. The submission deadline is the Friday prior to the publication date.
