Dean of Students search to be reopened

by Annette Hacker

The Dean of Students post will remain open for a few more months, vice president for student affairs Tom Hill announced last week.

Six finalists interviewed for the job in January following a national search. Hill said he was pleased with the quality of applicants and the search process, but emerging needs in the Student Affairs division are causing him to reassess what the dean of students job may entail in the future.

"A number of factors -- including our budget reallocation process -- came up at the same time the search was under way," Hill said. "These issues may impact the organizational structure of our Dean of Students Office, and I'm compelled to reexamine that structure before I appoint our next dean of students."

Hill said a new search will begin yet this semester.

"If the duties and specifications of the position change somewhat, we want to be clear in what we are seeking," he said.

Sharon McGuire, assistant dean of students who has served as the interim dean of students since July 1, will continue in that role. Hill said his goal is to appoint a new dean of students by the time fall semester begins in late August.
