Student Varieties shows open this weekend

by Anne Krapfl

The Make-A-Wish Foundation again will reap the financial benefits of a successful 2006 Varieties run. The student production, with its talent show-format of sorts, gets under way this weekend with the first preliminary round. Sweepstakes weekend is Feb. 24-25.

Each of three preliminary shows will feature two 20-minute skits (mini-musicals, really), several five- to eight-minutes vignettes by other student teams, and an emcee team whose task it is to weave together the evening in an entertaining way. Each team is vying to represent its category (skit, vignette, emcee) in the Varieties Sweepstakes.

The skits typically include a stage set, costumes, musical numbers and a live band. Vignette performances this year will include an ISU rapper, a trombone octet, a belly dancer, a magic hands dance group and ISU juggling club, among others.

Preliminary shows begin at 6 and 9 p.m. on consecutive Saturday evenings: Jan. 28, Feb. 4 and Feb. 11, in the Memorial Union Great Hall. Tickets are $7 and available at the hotel desk (first floor) of the Memorial Union.

Sweepstakes weekend is Feb. 24-25. The Varieties Sweepstakes features the top three skits, top three vignettes and top emcee team, as judged in the preliminary rounds. Sweepstakes performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, and at 6 and 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, also in the Great Hall. Tickets are $8.

A majority of ticket proceeds, and donations taken at the door at all performances, will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Varieties began its donor relationship with the wish-granting organization for children with life-threatening medical conditions about five years ago.
