Calling all golf fans

Volunteers knowledgeable about golf policy, procedure and etiquette are needed for the sixth annual National Special Olympics Golf Tournament, to be held in Ames Friday evening, Sept. 16, through Monday afternoon, Sept. 19. About 200 Special Olympians from 28 states will compete in the tournament, to be played at Coldwater and Ames Golf and Country clubs. Cyclone golf alumna and LPGA Tour member Beth Bader will attend, and former PGA Tour member Peter Longo will do a "trick shot" show at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at Coldwater Golf Links.

To volunteer, contact Jan Williams, Ames Convention & Visitors Bureau, janw@amescvb.com, 515-956-4602, or sign up online. You will be notified about assignment details and a mandatory training session on Sept. 7, 8 or 12.

Next summer, the golf tournament will be part of the first-ever Special Olympics USA National Games, which Iowa State and Ames will host the first week of July.

Business startup guide available

A new resource can help steer Iowa State faculty and staff through the complex process of starting a business. The Faculty/staff startup guide for technology-based businesses: Making the transition from research to a commercial enterprise offers basic tips and provides key ISU contacts for assistance. ISU facilitators are identified for each major activity in the progression from laboratory to commerce: business development, technology development, intellectual property and administrative issues/conflict of interest.

"We want faculty and staff to know that they don't have to do this alone. There are resources and people on campus who can help at every stage of their business development," said Lisa Lorenzen, director of industry relations in the office of the vice provost for research.

The 13-page startup guide is online at http://www.industry.iastate.edu under "For Faculty" in the list on the left. For a printed color copy, contact Lora Bierbaum, 4-8700, lora@iastate.edu.

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a leading researcher on creativity, will speak on campus Thursday, Sept. 8, to open the Center for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities' 2005-06 series, "Cultivating the Creative Faculty." His talk begins at 8 p.m. in the Memorial Union Sun Room.

Csikszentmihalyi was the Helen LeBaron Hilton Chair in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences in fall 2000. He is the Davidson professor of psychology in the School of Management at Claremont Graduate University, California, and directs the school's Quality of Life Research Center.
