ISU to host August 'After Hours'Iowa State will host the Ames Chamber of Commerce's "Business After Hours" from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 16 in Reiman Gardens. President Gregory Geoffroy invites faculty and staff to attend the get-together of the chamber members and the university community. Tour Reiman Gardens' outdoor gardens, conservatory and butterfly wing; meet new Iowa State faculty and staff; visit exhibits about ISU programs and services; and register for free ISU merchandise. A brief program will begin at 5:45 p.m. Enter the gardens at the intersection of S. 16th Street and Elwood Drive. Geoffroy, Skorton on Talk of IowaPresident Gregory Geoffroy will be joined by University of Iowa President David Skorton during the 10-11 a.m. segment of Talk of Iowa on Tuesday, Aug. 23. Call for proposalsThe P&S Council's Recruitment and Retention Committee seeks proposals for programs and projects that foster student recruitment and retention and address the goals of the 2005-2010 strategic plan. For 2005-2006, $30,000 has been allocated for this 12th annual grant program. Grant proposals are due Monday, Aug. 29. Shift in work-study fundsBeginning fall semester, the funding split for the work-study program will change from 70/30 to 60/40. Federal, state and institutional funds will pay 60 percent of student wages, while departments will be responsible for 40 percent. Due to limited funding, the change is necessary in order to provide work-study opportunities for as many undergraduate students as possible. Summer hours end Aug. 12Iowa State's optional summer office hours period (7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. with shortened lunch break) ends Friday, Aug. 12. Regular office hours resume Monday, Aug. 15; fall classes begin Monday, Aug. 22. CoHort plant sale is Aug. 14The Reiman Garden Co-Horts will hold a plant sale Aug. 14 (9 a.m.-4 p.m., Reiman Gardens maintenance building). A variety of perennials and native grasses will be sold. Orientation for international TAsThe Graduate College's SPEAK/TEACH program will hold an orientation session to the U.S. classroom for first-time international teaching assistants Aug. 15 (2-4:30 p.m., 1105 Pearson). The session includes information about undergraduate students and their expectations and relationships with TAs, and video excerpts on teaching strategies and communicating with students and faculty. Volunteers sought for Destination eventsDestination Iowa State, which helps new students acclimate to campus, will be held Aug. 18-20. Volunteers are needed to greet new students and help locate their team leaders at a 6 p.m. picnic Aug. 18 in the Scheman courtyard. Faculty and staff also are sought to lead a new student session Friday and Saturday morning, Aug. 19-20. An outline and supplies are provided.
