No supplemental tuition next spring

by Anne Krapfl

Iowa State students will not pay higher tuition rates next spring than they do fall semester. A scheduled decision July 14 by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, on a supplemental tuition request for spring semester 2006 was canceled following news that Gov. Tom Vilsack had identified an additional $11 million in funds and projected savings for the three regent universities.

The proposed 3 percent spring supplemental tuition increase would have brought in an estimated $2.2 million to Iowa State.

According to a news release from the board office, the additional funds are:

  • $5.7 million (federal source) for the new Iowa Cares/expanded Medicaid program at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
  • $4 million in projected savings through more efficient purchasing processes
  • An additional $1.35 million in funds earmarked for economic development efforts at the regent universities (for a total of $6.35 million)

With the announcement last week, additional state support for the regent universities in FY06 will be about $40 million, about $15 million of which is continuing, unrestricted funding. About $9 million is one-time funding, and $6.35 million is earmarked for economic development.

The regents will give final approval to university budgets at their Aug. 3-4 meeting in Davenport.
