July 1, 2005 Founding ceremony for Human Sciences is July 1by Kevin Brown Iowa State will mark the founding of the College of Human Sciences with a ceremonial ribbon-tying event at 10 a.m. Friday, July 1, on Osborn Drive, between MacKay and Lagomarcino halls. All are welcome. Refreshments will be served. The event recognizes the combination of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and the College of Education. "This is an exciting and historic moment for Iowa State and the new College of Human Sciences," said Susan Carlson, associate provost. "We felt it was fitting to have this very public celebration with the faculty, staff, alumni and students who worked together to shape and define the College of Human Sciences." Speaking at the event will be President Gregory Geoffroy, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Benjamin Allen, College of Human Sciences Dean designate Cheryl Achterberg, and Caroline Seward, incoming student president of the College of Human Sciences Council. Following the presentation, faculty, staff, students and visitors will be invited to form a human chain and pass a ceremonial ribbon from each building to be tied in the middle of Osborn Drive. MacKay Hall was the administrative home for the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, and Lagomarcino Hall was the administrative hub for the College of Education. Osborn Drive from Farm House Lane to the MacKay loading dock will be closed from 8 a.m. to noon for the ceremony. Interim leadershipAllen recently announced that Pam White will serve as interim dean of the new College of Human Sciences in its inaugural two months. White has been serving as interim dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences for the past two years. "Dr. White has a thorough understanding of the issues associated with the new college," Allen said. "We are grateful to her for her continued leadership service to the university." Achterberg, of The Pennsylvania State University, will become dean of the new college on Sept. 1. At that time, White, who is a University professor of food science and human nutrition, will return to the food science and human nutrition faculty. Jerry Thomas, who has been serving as interim dean of the College of Education, will return to his position as chair of the department of health and human performance on July 1. |
