Share Thanksgiving with international students

Volunteers Needed for Ames Lab/ISU Science Bowl

About 90 volunteers (scientific and non-scientific) are needed to help at the annual Ames Laboratory/ISU High School Science Bowl Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, in the Memorial Union. Volunteers serve as moderators, judges, timekeepers and scorekeepers. The volunteer registration form is online at http://www.ameslab.gov/sbvolunteer.htm. Case studies in online learning

LAS faculty Lee Anne Willson and Heike Hoffmann will share their experiences using online learning materials in their classrooms during a free one-hour seminar at noon Thursday, Dec. 2, in the university studio, Communications Building. Willson will describe developing and implementing two Web-based, self-paced courses covering some of the toughest concepts of beginning astronomy. Hoffmann will describe developing an electronic database for instructional statistics material, such as quizzes, exams, homework assignments, labs and exercise questions. Pizza and beverages will be served. The seminar also will be shown live on the Web at http://www.coll.las.iastate.edu. Internationalization grant proposals sought

The Council on International Programs has issued a call for proposals of up to $5,000 for internationalization/globalization grants to be spent by June 30. More information is online at http://www.iastate.edu/~cip/Grants/Grant.html.

Toys for Tots drop site on campus

The U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, through Iowa State's Naval ROTC program, will collect new, unwrapped toys until noon Dec. 20 outside 3 Armory for the national Toys for Tots project. Non-profit organizations in central Iowa will distribute the toys to families in need. For more information, contact Mark Mast, 4-0332.

ISCORE issues call for proposals

Information on proposals for the 6th Annual Iowa State Conference on Race and Ethnicity (ISCORE) is available online at http://www.admissions.iastate.edu/iscore/. The deadline for proposals is Tuesday, Nov. 30. ISCORE is a comprehensive forum on issues of race and ethnicity at Iowa State. The 2005 conference will be March 4 in the Memorial Union. Common Threads raises money for ACCESS

Members of the Common Threads Learning Community will sell "Heartwarmer" polar fleece accessories, including some items for kids and infants, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 29-Dec. 3 in the LeBaron lobby. Profits will go to ACCESS, the Ames shelter for abused women and their children.

Senate, YMCA host Giving Tree

The Faculty Senate and Ames-ISU YMCA are hosting the annual "Giving Tree," which provides gifts to 50 area children in need of family support services. Members of the campus community are invited to take one of the children's "wishes" hung on the Giving Tree in the senate office, 103 Lab of Mechanics, buy the item and return it to the senate office by Dec. 8.
