October 8, 2004 Where's Bob?Do you know where university photographer Bob Elbert spotted this bell? |
AnswerUniversity photographer Bob Elbert found this bell on the west side of the Jacobson Building. The notation on the bell reads: "Iowa Agricultural College 1890, Science with Practice." Known today as the "Victory Bell," it was cast in 1890 in Troy, N.Y., and originally used on central campus to signal student curfews and changes between class periods. It was moved to the former Clyde Williams Field in the early 20th century and, several years ago, to its current location on the north side of Jack Trice Stadium. The bell's ring today signifies a Cyclone victory. |
