Looking ahead

Kevin Kane, 2004-05 president of the Professional and Scientific Council

Job at ISU: Assistant director of Academic Information Technologies, overseeing GIS and communications functions; adjunct assistant professor, department of landscape architecture; part-time Ph.D. student in education leadership and policy studies

Arrived at ISU: February 1997

Previous service on council: Elected in March 2001, re-elected in March 2004; co-chair of the council's representation and awards committee (2001); vice president (2002); now serving a second one-year term as president

Top council goals this year (set at August retreat):

  • The council has a history of interest in human resources (HR) issues, and will work to identify ways to work with the HR staff. Examples could be conducting exit interviews or completing the annual P&S salary report.
  • In the absence of the system-wide review of the compensation and classification system recommended in a March audit, identify smaller changes to the system that would make a difference.
  • Identify a larger role for P&S staff in retaining students, particularly in non-academic areas such as student affairs.

Thoughts on the year:

"Between my job in AIT, my faculty position, the council presidency and my Ph.D. studies, I feel like a student of the university. I want to keep a wide perspective, and keep my eyes open to the big discussions -- on the strategic plan, campus climate survey, NCA [North Central Association] accreditation -- and make sure P&S staff have a voice in those discussions.

"Visibility of the council is another thing I'd like to see improve and, in our first year of electing a president and president-elect, I need to make sure that the new structure works and succeeds."
