Tips for new faculty

Associate provost Susan Carlson says the most important message to new faculty is this: You are here because we know you can contribute to making this an exciting and innovative university. You are the future of the university, and faculty and administration join in wanting to help you succeed."

That said, she added a few basic suggestions:

  • Make good use of your official mentor(s).
  • Attend the university-wide orientation events for new faculty.
  • Get to know your department members and especially your department chair.
  • Learn the expectations for your academic performance at ISU. Ask questions!
  • Set goals for the year, and later in the semester be sure to set goals for your first three years.
  • Choose wisely--you probably can't do all that you will be asked to do. Don't be afraid to protect your time.
  • Develop a support system to complement your mentoring. Go both inside and outside of the department for allies and supporters.
  • Take care of yourself. Enjoy your life outside of the university!
